Aligning your business critical success factors with your employees ambitions, needs and passion will clearly spell-out success. Once both parties have a stake and full ownership of overall performance rest of the peaces of the puzzle will follow in place naturally. Business has to have a clear message and define what is expected from people that comprise it and what will be the benefit!
